The basic premise is that artists donate a piece of their own work that is unfinished, stuck or abandoned for some reason. Other artists perform in teams as “art mechanics” to transform and 'repair' the stalled works for exhibition.
Inspired by her father's auto body shop, artist Susan Begy created ArtCollision to bring artists into collaboration with other artists in the same community. The project plays with ideas of failure and success, authorship, the definition of completion, and collaborative problem solving. And it's a blast!
Art & Collision & Repair Shop debuted in Santa Fe, NM where Begy lived at the time. The "repaired" work was exhibited at Center for Contemporary Arts Santa Fe in 2014-15. Co-curated by Begy and Kathryn M Davis, the project involved 14 original artists, 28 art mechanics, and 9 completed works.
Begy is planning another shop in Rochester, NY her native city where she now lives and works. As a flexible template, ArtCollision prompts local artists to collaborate in new ways.
