THE STORY OF ART COLLISION & REPAIR SHOP™ SANTA FE
video by Curious Alien Studio
The Art Collision & Repair Shop is an ongoing project that brings artists into collaboration with other artists in the same community. The basic premise is that artists donate a piece of their own work that is unfinished, stuck or abandoned for some reason. Other artists perform in teams as “art mechanics” to transform and 'repair' the stalled works for exhibition.
Created by artist Susan Begy, ArtCollision plays with ideas of failure and success, authorship, the definition of completion, and collaborative problem solving. An auto repair shop owned by Begy's father provided the inspiration for the project with additional influence from SVA grad studios and critiques.
ArtCollision debuted at Center for Contemporary Arts in Santa Fe in 2014. Co-curated by Begy and Kathryn M Davis, the project involved 14 original artists, 28 art mechanics, and 9 completed works. The project continues in cities around the United States, and as a flexible template, ArtCollision prompts local artists to collaborate in new ways.
