Inspired by her father's auto body shop, Brooklyn artist Susan Begy created ArtCollision to bring artists into collaboration with other artists in the same community. The project plays with ideas of failure and success, authorship, the definition of completion, and collaborative problem solving.
The basic premise is that artists donate a piece of their own work that is unfinished, stuck or abandoned for some reason. Other artists perform in teams as “art mechanics” to transform and 'repair' the stalled works for exhibition.
Art & Collision & Repair Shop began in Santa Fe, NM where Begy was living at the time. The "repaired" work was exhibited at Center for Contemporary Arts Santa Fe in 2014-15. Co-curated by Begy and Kathryn M Davis, the project involved 14 original artists, 28 art mechanics, and 9 completed works.
Begy is interested in continuing the project in other cities. As a flexible template, ArtCollision prompts local artists to collaborate in new ways.
